Biography

James is a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon at the Manchester Hand Centre, working jointly at our specialist sites at Wythenshawe Hospital and Salford Royal. He studied medicine in Leicester, including a year in immunology research at the Institute for Infection, Immunity and Inflammation at the University of Leicester. Following graduation he undertook basic training in North Manchester.

James undertook Integrated Academic Training in plastic surgery and surgical education under the supervision of Professors Ged Byrne and Paul O'Neill at Manchester University, developing systems for education and training in burns care using high fidelity simulation, with the award of a Masters of Research from Manchester in 2012.

Alongside clinical training in plastic surgery in Manchester and Preston, James developed an interest in service development and clinical leadership, and was awarded a two year Clinical Leadership Fellowship, completing an MSc in Healthcare Leadership and Management and receiving the NHS Leadership Academy Award in Senior Healthcare Leadership in 2016 for work on process mapping of complex healthcare systems.

Having developed a special interest in hand surgery and limb reconstruction, James was awarded the prestigious national Orthoplastic Interface Fellowship in Hand Surgery in Leeds, where he worked with the UK national hand transplant team, developing expertise in complex upper limb and nerve reconstruction, children's hand surgery and microsurgery. On completion of the fellowship, he was entered on to the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery in March 2018, and joined the department in Manchester as a consultant around the same time.

James' principle interests are in complex upper limb reconstruction following trauma, nerve injury, paralysis or palsy, but he also has a broad hand surgery practice including traumatic and other problems relating to the hand and wrist.
