Biography

Siobhán O’Ceallaigh qualified in Medicine from the National University of Ireland (University College Dublin) in 1996. Following early plastic surgical training in Ireland, she moved to Manchester in 2002 to undergo a research fellowship at the University of Manchester studying the microscopic process of skin grafting. Following the awarding of her doctoral thesis in 2005, Siobhan commenced higher surgical training in plastic surgery in the North West, training at Wythenshawe, the Christie and Royal Preston Hospitals. Following completion of training and the awarding of the FRCS (Plast) fellowship in plastic surgery, she became a National Oncoplastic Breast fellow where she undertook her fellowship at the renowned Nottingham Breast Institute, learning about the management of all aspects of breast cancer treatment as well as refining skills in breast reconstruction and aesthetics.

On awarding of her Certificate of Specialist training and entry onto the Specialist register in Plastic Surgery, Siobhan was appointed as a plastic and oncoplastic breast surgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, in May 2012, before returning to Manchester to take up a breast reconstruction post at UHSM in June 2013.

Siobhan specialises in microsurgical breast reconstruction (DIEP, TRAM, TUG flap) as well as oncoplastic techniques of therapeutic mammaplasty and partial breast reconstruction with local perforator flaps. She also specialises in the treatment of developmental breast asymmetry and all aspects of revisional breast reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. She provides the surgical care of patients at high-risk of developing breast cancer who undergo risk-reducing surgery and participates in the family history multi-disciplinary team. She also works closely with colleagues in the breast cancer team at the Nightingale Breast Unit and holds a joint Breast/Plastic Surgery oncoplastic clinic with Mr John Murphy alternate weeks.
