Abdominal & chest wall reconstruction
Collaborative surgery may occasionally be required for complex defects of the chest and abdominal wall. Surgeons from the Manchester Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns have developed working relationships with other surgeons across Greater Manchester to provide a regional service catering for these problems, described in more detail below.
Abdominal Wall Reconstruction
We work with our General Surgical colleagues at both MFT and the Intestinal Failure Unit at Salford Royal Hospital To provide combined care for patients requiring complex abdominal wall reconstruction for conditions such as massive hernias, complex fistulae, and after laparostomy.
The MCPSB surgeons offering this service are:
- Mr James Bedford, with Ms Stella Smith at MFT, and Mr Dominic Slade & Prof Gordon Carlson at SRFT
- Mr Nadeem Khwaja, with Prof Aali Sheen & Ms Stella Smith at MFT

Amongst these operation are:
- Enhanced local closure by ‘Component Separation’
- Regional pedicle flap reconstruction:
- Fasciocutaneous perforator flaps
- Pectoralis major flaps
- Latissimus dorsi flaps
- Vertical rectus abdominis flaps
- Anterolateral thigh flaps
- Extended lateral thigh flap (this technique was developed with our Centre for closure of massive abdominal defects, Lambe et al. Br J Surg. 2012 Jul;99(7):964-72)
- Free tissue transfer.
Cardiac and Thoracic Reconstruction
We also work regularly with our colleagues in Cardiothoracic Surgery at UHSM to undertake major reconstructions of the chest wall following cancer resection. Our surgeons offering this service include Mr Chris Duff, Mr Adam Reid, Mr James Bedford and Mr Jonathan Duncan.
